Head of Department, Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University

Are you passionate about shaping the future of the Department of Biomedicine at the Faculty of Health? Are you an experienced leader and an acknowledged researcher with an international outlook? If so, one of the most attractive biomedical science leadership positions in Scandinavia may be yours as from 1 June 2019.

You will be in the forefront of the further development of a highly professional and ambitious department with dedicated staff members. You will work closely and trust-based with your colleagues at Aarhus University. Together your goal is to ensure that it will remain a hub for internationally renowned biomedical research and education.

You will be a part of The Faculty Senior Management Team. In collaboration with the four other Heads of Departments and the Dean’s Office, you share the ambition to further develop Aarhus University as an internationally acclaimed elite university that contributes to solving fundamental challenges in society.

You show the path for world-class biomedical research and educational programmes
You must, among others:

• Strengthen and further develop the framework and orientation of the research, ensuring that it has international recognition and impact.
• Ensure the quality and professional contents of the Bachelor’s Programme in Medicine and Master’s Programme in Molecular Medicine.
• Work strategically and systematically with the Department’s senior scientific staff and research groups on, e.g., leadership, recruitment, external funding and internationalization to strengthen the impact of research and education.
• Map out the Department’s profile and future strategic objectives and prioritize accordingly.
• Promote collaborations with the Faculty’s and the University’s research communities.
• Support a healthy culture of collaboration within which all staff members may develop and thrive. You will be in charge of the Department’s working environment.
• Ensure financial management and budget compliance in a complex organisation, where professional activities are often funded by several sources.

Visible leader and respected researcher
We expect that you:

• Are a renowned researcher within one or more of the Department’s professional focus areas.
• Hold managerial and financial management experience, including facilitation of external funding.
• Communicate clearly and constructively in writing and orally. Non-Scandinavian speaking applicants must learn Danish within the first 2 years of their appointment.
• Are assertive and has the clout needed to be effective in university fora.
• Think visionary and imaginative and realistically back up initiatives that further the development of the Department’s research and educational activities.
• Are open, appreciative and approachable in your management style and thrive in a visible leadership role.

We offer
An exciting and varied leadership position that gives you considerable influence on the development of the Department and academic biomedicine in Denmark. Pending negotiation, part of your working hours may be used for research or teaching activities.

In 2018, the Department will be moving to brand new premises, with state-of-the-art laboratories, animal experimental facilities and advanced image diagnostic installations beautifully located centrally on the university campus in Aarhus.

Your daily work is supported by the Department’s Secretariat and the Faculty’s administrative staff functions. You will work closely with the experienced manager of the Secretariat. You report to the Dean of Health.

The Department in figures and headings
The Department has approx. 450 employees (including about 300 scientific staff). The gross budget ascends to around 280 million DKK annually. The research focuses on human biology and disease with approx. 80 PhD students and 400 annual research publications. The Bachelor’s Programme in Medicine and Molecular Medicine counts approximately 500 students per year.

Recruitment procedure
This is a fixed-term position filled for a period of up to 6 years, with an option to extend
the period for an additional 3 years.

The Department Head is appointed by the Dean. The recruitment and appointment procedure follows the Danish University Act and internal university provisions, which, among others, involves the establishment of an advisory group and an appointment committee.
