Profile

Dr. Börgeson earned her PhD in Medicine from University College Dublin. As a Marie Curie Fellow at UC San Diego, she studied pro-resolving compounds in diabetes. In 2017, she established her lab at the University of Gothenburg, focusing on cardiometabolic disease and inflammatory resolution. Since 2022, she has been a tenured Associate Professor at Aarhus University, Denmark. Her translational lab is located at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus and the Department of Biomedicine.

Research

Can resolving inflammation help reduce cardiometabolic disease? At the Börgeson lab, we explore how human immunometabolism contributes to obesity-related diseases and cardiovascular risk. We investigate the therapeutic potential of lipoxin lipids in promoting the resolution of inflammation in patient-specific tissues and immune cells, aiming to identify personalized strategies to lower disease burden.

Teaching activities

I am passionate about inspiring my students through research-led teaching. At Aarhus University, I am particularly involved in teaching within the medical degree program and at the Department of Biomedicine. My teaching portfolio includes:

  • Lecturer in Molecular Principles of Cell and Organ Functions (MoPCO)
  • Lecturer in Integration of Cell and Organ Function (InCO)
  • Lecturer in PhD-level courses, including Basic Cardiometabolic Research and Clinical Assessment of Insulin Resistance
  • Course leader for the PhD course Grant Writing (#A330/01)

I also supervise PhD students and medical students in cardiometabolic research and greatly value supporting their academic development.

In addition, I have authored two research publications on PhD education, focusing on the challenges that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Lange S, Soták M, Hagberg CE, Bagunu G, Vigmo S, Börgeson E. Students at a crossroad: A cross-sectional survey gauging the impact of COVID-19 on medical and biomedical graduates in the United States and Sweden. Biochem Mol Biol Educ. 2023 Sep-Oct;51(5):508-519.
Börgeson E, Sotak M, Kraft J, Bagunu G, Biörserud C, Lange S. Challenges in PhD education due to COVID-19 — disrupted supervision or business as usual: a cross-sectional survey of Swedish biomedical sciences graduate students. BMC Med Educ. 2021 May 22;21(1):294.

Collaborations

Dr. Börgeson’s laboratory has established numerous international collaborations, including with groups in the USA (UC San Diego, UC Davis, Harvard), Sweden (Gothenburg University, Karolinska Institute, Linköping University), Finland (University of Helsinki), Ireland (University College Dublin), and Germany (UT Dresden). These collaborations have led to several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Cell Metabolism, Diabetologia, the Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Scientific Reports.

Job responsibilities

The main responsibilities of my position as Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University include conducting research in the field of immunometabolism and teaching in the areas of medical physiology (Integration of Cell and Organ Function) and medical biomedicine (Molecular Principles of Cell and Organ Function). Additionally, I serve as course leader for the Grant Writing course for PhD students and teach on several other PhD-level courses, while also supervising both PhD and medical students. I further serve as Chair of the Cardiovascular Research Network at Aarhus University.
