Profile

I am Professor of Medical Physics working with radiotherapy. My research mainly focuses on motion management in radiotherapy and FLASH radiotherapy.

Research

My research group focus on two overall strategies to maximize the efficacy of radiotherapy of cancer with minimized side effects. The first strategy is precise targeting of tumors that move during treatment such as tumors in the thorax, abdomen, or prostate. We develop methods for real-time tumor motion monitoring, real-time treatment adaptation, and real-time calculation of the radiotherapy dose as it is being delivered in moving tumors. The second strategy is radiotherapy with ultra-high dose rates, so-called FLASH therapy, which reduces side effects with maintained tumor killing efficiency. The exact conditions needed to trigger the FLASH effect, and the underlying mechanism, are not yet understood. We are investigating these issues in a multidisciplinary research strategy that involves physics, radiobiology, and FLASH effect modelling.

Job responsibilities

I lead the Tracking Research Group at the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy and have a very strong collaboration on FLASH radiotherapy with the Department of Experimental Clinical Oncology at Aarhus University Hospital.
