Christopher Kabrhel is an emergency physician and internationally recognized for his research in epidemiology, diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. He focuses particularly on venous thromboembolism (VTE) — a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins and can travel to the lungs.

The newly appointed honorary professor is, among other things, behind the development of the globally used PERC criteria for diagnosing pulmonary embolism and the PERT concept, where an interdisciplinary team can quickly meet online to discuss treatment strategies for complex pulmonary embolism patients.

“Our results can have a major impact on the standard treatment of severe cases of pulmonary embolism,” says Christopher Kabrhel, who has worked closely with researchers at Aarhus University over the past ten years.

The future collaboration will, among other things, focus on a clinical trial concerning oxygen therapy in connection with acute pulmonary embolism.

Christopher Kabrhel has already paved the way for many Aarhus students, who, with the professor as mentor, have undertaken research stays in Boston.

According to physician and associate professor Mads Dam Lyhne from the Department of Clinical Medicine, who has a close collaboration with Christopher Kabrhel, the professorship is a major gain for Aarhus University:

“Having such close contact with one of the world’s leading research environments in our field is an invaluable resource. Christopher Kabrhel offers not only his professional expertise and experience, but also his kindness and hospitality. And now all of this will benefit even more of Aarhus University’s researchers,” he says.
