Associate professor receives international recognition for research on music and the brain
Leonardo Bonetti, associate professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine and the Center for Music in the Brain at Aarhus University, has been awarded the British Carnetic Choir (BCC) Award for Arts & Culture 2025. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Consulate General of India in Birmingham.

The Aarhus-based associate professor received the BCC Award in recognition of his interdisciplinary work that combines music, neuroscience, and data analysis to explore how music can be used as a tool in both education and research on brain function.
Leonardo Bonetti employs techniques such as MEG and MRI and develops novel analytical methods to study core brain mechanisms. His research focuses on how the brain processes and remembers musical patterns over time, contributing to new knowledge about mental aging, health, and pathological memory conditions.
His research bridges science and art and is relevant to musicians, psychologists, physicists, and neurologists alike.
“The award is a great honor - not only as recognition of my research but also as a reminder of the importance of coming together across disciplines and cultures. Receiving it at a ceremony filled with music and tradition at the Consulate General of India in Birmingham made the experience even more meaningful to me,” says Leonardo Bonetti.
