Better anaesthesia to strengthen treatment for patients with stroke
Consultant and PhD Mads Rasmussen is a new clinical professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. His research focuses on neuroanaesthesia, with particular emphasis on how anaesthesia and circulatory treatment affect the brain in patients with stroke and other neurological diseases.
Mads Rasmussen is a specialist in anaesthesiology and conducts research into how anaesthesia, blood pressure treatment and medication that supports the circulation affect the brain. His research follows patients undergoing surgery or catheter-based treatments for diseases of the brain’s blood vessels, including after a stroke.
“My aim is to improve treatment for patients with stroke and other neurological diseases. By optimising anaesthesia, blood pressure management and circulatory treatment, we are working to improve patients’ functional ability and increase their quality of life,” says Mads Rasmussen.
The new clinical professor has contributed to national and international studies of patients with acute stroke. Among other things, the studies have shown that blood pressure management and the choice of anaesthesia may be important when removing blood clots from the brain’s blood vessels. Using PET and MRI scans, he also investigates how anaesthesia and medicines affect blood supply and oxygenation in the brain and body.
The professorship is supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and Central Denmark Region’s Health Science Research Foundation.
