Esben Agerbo was honoured at the National Network Day for Suicide Prevention on 4 November 2025 at Aarhus University Hospital, where he received the award and a prize of 10,000 kroner for his research into the epidemiological, genetic, and environmental causes of mental illness and suicidal behaviour.

Holding a Doctor of Medical Science degree in epidemiology and with a background in mathematical statistics and economics, Esben Agerbo has made substantial contributions to the understanding of how genetic and social factors influence mental health and suicide risk. His work combines advanced statistical methods with register-based research and has had a notable impact both within academia and on broader societal efforts in the field.

“I am very pleased and proud to receive the Nordentoft Prize. It is a recognition of many years of work dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide – a complex and deeply human issue that demands both scientific and societal attention,” says Esben Agerbo, who has been research group leader at The National Centre for Register-Based Research since 2015.

The Nordentoft Prize is named after Professor Merete Nordentoft from the University of Copenhagen and is awarded annually by the Association for Education and Research in Suicide Prevention (FUFS).
