Health's new honorary doctor is a world-renowned specialist in liver diseases
Professor Jacob George from the University of Sydney has 25 years of experience leading both clinical and basic research in liver diseases, as well as developing new treatment methods targeting liver conditions. He has now been appointed honorary doctor at the Faculty of Health in connection with Aarhus University's annual celebration.

Jacob Georges research on liver diseases has been highly influential. In 2009, he led the international effort to redefine the condition non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to metabolic (dysfunction) which on that occasion was also renamed associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and. This work is widely recognised and has been incorporated into international guidelines.
The new honorary doctor has also developed a non-invasive algorithm to stage liver fibrosis, which has been licensed to the world's largest biotech company, Roche, through the Danish firm Nordic Bioscience. This algorithm is now included in the MAFLD guidelines.
Professor Jacob George is Honorary Skou Professor at the Faculty of Health, affiliated with the Department of Clinical Medicine and the collaboration between Aarhus University and the University of Sydney over the past decade has resulted in more than 30 publications in highly ranked journals, joint research applications, and PhD student exchanges.
