Honorary professor to improve treatment of children with sleep apnea
An Boudewyns has been appointed as an honorary professor at Aarhus University's Department of Clinical Medicine and the University Clinic for Flavour, Balance, and Sleep at Regional Hospital Gødstrup. Her research will focus on both sleep apnea and genetically determined hearing loss in children.

Aarhus University's new honorary professor, An Boudewyns, specializes in pediatric otorhinolaryngology as well as pediatric sleep medicine. Her goal is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of children with sleep-related breathing disorders.
An Boudewyns places particular emphasis on identifying the causes of upper airway obstruction in children with pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. She aims to develop tailored treatments that enhance the chances of effective and lasting improvement.
"Far too many children live with undiagnosed or improperly treated obstructive sleep apnea, which can have severe consequences for their development and quality of life. My work focuses on ensuring faster and more precise diagnostics so that we can customize treatment for each child," she says.
In addition, An Boudewyns is working to improve the understanding of the genetics behind hearing loss in children - an area that could be crucial for early intervention and rehabilitation.
"If we can identify the genetic cause of hearing loss early, it allows us to offer more targeted treatment and better counseling for families," explains An Boudewyns.
In addition to her affiliation with Aarhus University and the Regional Hospital Gødstrup, An Boudewyns is an associate professor in pediatric otorhinolaryngology at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.
