"The aim of my research is to develop specialized rehabilitation interventions and models that can delay the loss of functional ability, improve quality of life, and support engagement in education and employment for people with muscular dystrophy and ALS," says Charlotte Handberg.

Her research is characterized by close collaboration with both individuals living with muscular dystrophy and ALS, as well as with healthcare professionals. Her work includes research on the medical treatment of spinal muscular atrophy and investigations into the everyday challenges faced by women with muscular dystrophy – for example, when using public restrooms.

"We conduct research with a high degree of user involvement and often include individuals with muscular dystrophy and ALS in our projects from beginning to end. This enhances the relevance and applicability of our results both nationally and internationally," she says.

The professorship will also impact teaching at Aarhus University:

"I am motivated by the fact that the research is communicated and applied in the teaching and supervision of students. It allows for the inclusion of concrete cases and strengthens practice-oriented learning," she explains.

Charlotte Handberg's professorship is established as a joint position between Aarhus University and the Rehabilitation Center for Muscular Dystrophy (RCFM).
