Millions to go towards research into genetic hormonal disorders

Claus Højbjerg Gravholt from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital has just received a substantial grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The grant will go towards getting closer to an understanding of why Turner syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome occur.

Over the past many years, Claus Højbjerg Gravholt from AU and AUH has carried out research into genetic hormonal disorders. He has now received a grant of DKK three million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation towards his research.

Claus Højbjerg Gravholt conducts research in the intersection between endocrinology and genetics.

"We’re trying to understand why chromosome disorders arise. The idea is that this can help us to understand large groups of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, which are often seen in patients with Turner syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome," he explains.

One goal of his research is to get a “360-degree” picture of patients with Turner syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome.

"The research is naturally in the first instance important for the patients, but after that it is also important in a larger context for understanding many disease processes on different levels, including the genetic, molecular, clinical and epidemiological," says Claus Højbjerg Gravholt.
