New professor aims to improve patient pathways for frail older patients
Merete Gregersen will take up the position of professor of integrated geriatric care at the Department of Clinical Medicine on 1 July 2026. Her research focuses on how the healthcare system can improve treatment, care and rehabilitation for frail older patients.
As a new professor, Merete Gregersen will strengthen clinical and practice-oriented research in geriatrics. Her research has a particular focus on frail older patients with hip fractures, acute medical conditions and complex pathways across sectors in the healthcare system.
“My goal is to help improve decision support, giving healthcare professionals a stronger basis for choosing the right treatment and care together with each individual patient and their relatives. In this way, we can prevent loss of functional ability and quality of life among frail older patients. This requires research that is close to clinical practice and interdisciplinary in nature, so that new knowledge can be applied in everyday practice,” says Merete Gregersen.
Merete Gregersen’s research is often based on interdisciplinary comprehensive assessments of older patients and systematic tools for assessing functional ability, health and the need for support. She is involved in projects on hip fractures, treatment with blood transfusions and iron, prehabilitation before surgery, and the prevention of overlooked care needs and inappropriate medication use among older people with acute illness.
The professorship will strengthen research and teaching in geriatrics and contribute to the development of future treatment and care for older patients.
Merete Gregersen is a trained nurse and holds a Master’s degree in health science and a PhD. She is affiliated with the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and the Research Unit at the Department of Geriatrics at Aarhus University Hospital, which supports the professorship.
