New Professor of spine surgery is the first of his kind in Denmark
Mikkel Mylius Rasmussen from the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and the Department of Neurosurgery at Aarhus University Hospital has been appointed Clinical Professor of neurosurgical spine disorders – the first within his field in Denmark.
“It is more important than ever that the right patient receives the right treatment. We need solid evidence to support both existing and new diagnostic and surgical procedures – and this is where research plays a crucial role,” says Mikkel Mylius Rasmussen.
He is a consultant neurosurgeon, and his research primarily focuses on degenerative spinal disorders such as age-related spinal osteoarthritis, traumatic spinal cord injuries, and congenital and acquired spinal cord malformations, including spina bifida and cysts.
In his research, Mikkel Mylius Rasmussen works on both clinical and experimental projects. For example, he uses animal models to study the effects of stem cell implants and the spinal cord's regenerative potential. He also participates in a randomized study exploring whether nerve root blocks can improve the selection of patients suitable for spine surgery.
“Spinal disorders are a widespread public health issue, yet there has never before been a professor of neurosurgical spine surgery in Denmark. I am pleased that Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital have recognized the potential of a dedicated professorship that can strengthen both treatment and research – to the benefit of patients,” he says.
The professorship will also impact Mikkel Mylius Rasmussen’s teaching activities. He looks forward to enhancing spine surgery education in the medical program and inspiring the next generation of doctors to specialize in this field.
