New professor strengthens fertility research in Aarhus
On May 1, 2025, Jens Fedder will assume the role of Professor of Andrology at the Department of Clinical Medicine. He brings with him over 40 years of experience in research on male fertility and sexual development - a rapidly evolving field.

Jens Fedder is a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics with a particular focus on andrology, the study of male anatomy and the reproductive system. He has previously served as Chief Consultant at the Fertility Clinic in Odense and held a professorship in human reproduction at the University of Southern Denmark for 14 years. He now looks forward to continuing his research in Aarhus.
"I began researching andrology and sex differentiation during my student years over 41 years ago. Since then, we’ve made tremendous progress. Today, we know of more than 160 genes with strong evidence of involvement in male infertility, and a new gene is identified approximately every two weeks. I look forward to building on this research in my new professorship," says Jens Fedder.
The professor is also involved in efforts to develop sperm cells in the laboratory.
"One of my goals is to enable human sperm production to take place in the lab - among other methods, by using pig testicular tissue in rats. This model has the potential to be a game-changer for men with reduced sperm quality or those who lose fertility due to chemotherapy," explains Jens Fedder.
Another key area of focus is the treatment of men with azoospermia - a condition where no sperm cells are present in the semen. Jens Fedder is working with advanced diagnostic and treatment methods, including genetic analyses and the surgical extraction of sperm directly from the testicles using microscopy techniques. He hopes to implement this method in clinics in both Aarhus and Horsens.
