New professor strengthens research in mental health
Oleguer Plana-Ripoll is a new professor at Aarhus University's Department of Public Health, where he is affiliated with The National Centre for Register-based Research. Here, he conducts research in psychiatric epidemiology and teaches the public health professionals of tomorrow.

With a background in mathematics and statistics and a PhD in epidemiology, Oleguer Plana-Ripoll is internationally recognized for his research in psychiatric epidemiology. He uses advanced methods and large volumes of register data to investigate the causes and consequences of mental disorders.
The newly appointed professor’s research contributes to a better understanding of the prevalence of mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia and their impacts - both health-related and societal. His research group is also working to improve register-based studies, for example by integrating survey data on social connections and lifestyle factors.
"The studies my colleagues and I conduct provide a good overview of the prevalence of mental disorders, their risk factors, and their consequences. Moreover, the methods we develop enable us to carry out more valid and precise studies, which can improve both health policy development and clinical practice," says Oleguer Plana-Ripoll.
The professorship also enables him to enhance his teaching of PhD students at Aarhus University. He emphasizes engaging students in complex issues within register-based research and equipping them to face future challenges in both public health and the research world.
