New research project to reduce children’s anxiety during hospitalization
Associate Professor Claus Sixtus Jensen from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital researches children’s and adolescents’ experiences of being hospitalized. He has just received DKK 7.5 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Nursing Research Programme.

Claus Sixtus Jensen is an associate professor of pediatric nursing at the Department of Clinical Medicine. He is leading the new research project RIGHT CHILD-CARE, which aims to reduce children’s anxiety and discomfort during hospital procedures and to create safe environments where children do not have to be physically restrained during treatment.
“When children are hospitalized, they often have to undergo examinations and treatments they do not understand – which can therefore seem frightening. This can lead to resistance, which in some cases we are forced to manage through restraint. But because restraint can be harmful to the child, burdensome for the parents, and cause moral distress among staff, we very much want to change that practice,” says Claus Sixtus Jensen.
In the new research project, Claus Sixtus Jensen and his research colleagues will introduce and test the ISupport Standards – a method that puts the child at the center and is designed to help children cope with hospital procedures and involve them in their own treatment.
The grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation spans five years and funds two PhD projects and one postdoctoral position. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Børns Vilkår (Children’s Welfare), Danish and international researchers, and seven pediatric departments at hospitals across all regions of Denmark.
