"We need more knowledge about epilepsy, ADHD, and autism in children"

Julie Werenberg Dreier is the new professor of psychiatric epidemiology at Aarhus University's Department of Public Health. Her research focuses on the intersection of psychiatry and neurology, with a particular emphasis on brain diseases in children and in relation to reproduction.

Julie Werenberg Dreier assumed her position as professor at the Department of Public Health on May 1, 2025, where she works, among other things, to strengthen Danish register-based research.

Julie Werenberg Dreier investigates how diseases such as epilepsy and febrile seizures, as well as developmental disorders like ADHD and autism, affect children's development, well-being, and educational pathways. She is especially committed to translating Danish register data into new knowledge.

"In Denmark, we have some of the best conditions in the world for conducting epidemiological research, and I am passionate about finding new ways to translate the data that are systematically recorded here into important knowledge that benefits the entire population," says Julie Werenberg Dreier.

She leads several research projects, including studies on how children with developmental disorders perform in school - academically, socially, and in terms of attendance. At the same time, she heads the Danish branch of ‘SCAN-AED Family’ - a large Nordic register-based research project investigating the use of antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy.

"The appointment as professor is a great vote of confidence and a recognition of the work we do in my research group. Our goal is to create knowledge that, in the broadest possible sense, benefits the population and society. This applies both to the families who live closely with these conditions and to the professionals who advise them," says Julie Werenberg Dreier.
