I am a Professor of Nursing, specializing in the care of critically ill patients and life with a home mechanical ventilator. I lead the ICU-CogHab research program, where we develop cognitive rehabilitation for intensive care patients. My focus is on the patient’s environment, including sound, light, circadian rhythm, and rehabilitation. I am a trained nurse with experience in both leadership and nursing education.
My research is within care and treatment of intensive care patients and individuals using home ventilators. I focus on understanding the experiences of both patients and their relatives. By using qualitative methods and working with complex interventions, my goal is to improve patient well-being and recovery while supporting their families throughout the process.
I teach in the Master's program in Nursing Science and the Master's program in Clinical Nursing at Aarhus University, as well as in the specialized training program for critical care nurses in the Central Denmark Region and the Region of Southern Denmark. Additionally, I have developed a Ricoeur-inspired interpretation method for analyzing empirical data in qualitative studies, which has been described in several academic books.
In the ICU-CogHab research program, I collaborate with VIA University College Aarhus and Lillebælt Vejle University Hospital. The project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with 7.5 million DKK from 2021 to 2025. Additionally, I am working on the project Live Music in the ICU in collaboration with Associate Professor Margrethe Langer Bro from the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus.
Based on my research in the field of intensive care nursing, I participate in the Danish Health Authority’s Special Education Council. Additionally, I serve as Chair of the Novo Nordisk Foundation's Committee for Nursing Research. I was the editor of the journal Nordic Nursing Research from 2014 to 2021 and served as Chair of the Danish Nursing Society (DASYS) from 2016 to 2024.
My main responsibilities include research, teaching, and supervising PhD students, as well as securing research funding at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital. Additionally, I assess academic work, serving as chair of assessment committees at Aarhus University and as an opponent at both Danish and international universities.
