Profile

As an Associate Professor of Sport and Body Culture, I examine the historical evolution of elite sport. I seek to understand power relations and the institutionalization of ethical standards in the Olympic Movement. I have a PhD  in Sport History from the German Sport University, in which I focused on the history of anti-doping, and a MA degree in International Sport Politics from the University of Brighton.

Research

My research focuses on the relationship between politics and international sport, anti-doping, athlete activism, and women in sport. I have written several books on international elite sport, including National Symbols and the Olympic Games (with Routledge), Power and Politics in World Athletics (with Routledge), Women in the Olympics and Dope Hunters (both with Commonground).

Teaching activities

I teach Sport History, Sport Sociology, and Sport and Globalization on the Sport Science B.A. and M.A. degree programs. I won the Faculty of Health's "Teacher of the Year" award in 2022, 2023, and 2024. I also contribute to international teaching courses and summer schools, and am the editor of the Teaching Book Series Sport & Society.

Consultancy

I am the Head of the Sport & Society Research Network, the International Network for Doping Research, and the Lillehammer Olympic & Paralympic Studies Centre. I have advised and collaborated with governing bodies of sport, indepedent sport organizations and political institutions such as the United Nation's Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Council of Europe.
