The number of people who suffer a blood clot in the heart has fallen drastically since the mid-90s. This is revealed by a study by Michael Mæng, who attributes the decline to better medical treatment. With his research, the newly appointed professor aims to ensure that the treatment is further optimised.

Prof. Mæng, of the Department of Clinical Medicine, conducts research into cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, heart failure and cardiac fibrillation. On the basis of data from approximately 200,000 patients and clinical studies, he identifies patients with a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, or who have a high risk of complications. He also undertakes the treatment of cardiac patients in his capacity as consultant in heart disease at Aarhus University Hospital.

The professorship has been made possible by a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
