Ministry approves medical degree programme in Herning

Medical students from Aarhus University will soon be able to complete the clinical part of their medical degree at the Regional Hospital Gødstrup in Herning. The master’s programme intake has just been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Going forward, 30 medical students will don their white coats and complete their master's degree in medicine in Herning. A unique collaboration between Aarhus University, Herning Municipality, Regional Hospital Gødstrup, and the Central Denmark Region means that, from 2029, Aarhus University will offer a full medical master's programme in Midtjylland. The initiative is part of the university’s increased focus on general practice, says Dean of the Faculty of Health, Anne-Mette Hvas:

"Alongside the establishment of the master’s programme in Gødstrup, we are working to give students more opportunities to choose general practice, particularly because we foresee a nationwide need for more GPs in the future."

In Herning, the news of the approved master’s programme has been met with great enthusiasm, says Mayor Dorte West:

"I’m incredibly pleased that it is now officially confirmed we will have a medical master’s programme in Herning. We already have a large student population here, and this adds yet another highly attractive opportunity for young people. It’s hugely significant – not just for us as a city, but also for patients and for the future of healthcare provision in the region.

In parallel with the new degree programme, Herning Municipality, Aarhus University and VIA University College are working to establish a new health education centre in Herning called SUND+. This centre will allow students from various health education programmes to receive teaching and collaborate across disciplines during their studies. And this will make a real difference for the students, says Mayor Dorte West:

"I’m really looking forward to the opening of SUND+, where students from different health disciplines will stand shoulder to shoulder in the clinic. With SUND+, we are giving them a unique opportunity to understand each other’s competencies – and how they can best work together once they are fully qualified. It will become a regional hub for health education, and I have very high hopes for it."

SUND+ is expected to open its doors as early as September 2026. The ambition is to bring radiography, nursing, and medical students together in the same clinical setting, where they will also receive joint instruction. Establishing strong interdisciplinary collaboration is essential, says Dean Anne-Mette Hvas:

"If we are to ensure equitable and high-quality healthcare in the future, and strong collaboration across sectors, then interdisciplinary teamwork is crucial. That’s why it is so important that tomorrow’s healthcare professionals develop a basic understanding of how we can best support patients throughout their journey in the healthcare system – and that’s what we aim to foster through interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing. With SUND+, we are creating a study environment that mirrors the reality students will face after graduation."
