Bas de Groot, a professor of emergency medicine, focuses on improving care for older and vulnerable patients. He has been granted DKK 3,166,865 from the Independent Research Fund Denmark to support a new research project.

In this project, the professor and his team will investigate how two new risk stratification tools can optimize treatment for older patients in ambulances while simultaneously reducing societal costs associated with hospital admissions.

"The demographic shift means that we increasingly encounter older patients with complex needs in our healthcare system. This grant allows us to work on developing solutions that not only save resources but also ensure better and more tailored treatment for each older patient," says Bas de Groot.

The project will utilize a combination of a new age-adjusted assessment tool and a well-established clinical frailty index. These tools aim to assist emergency medical teams in making more informed decisions, ensuring that patients receive treatment tailored to their individual needs and health conditions.

The researchers hypothesize that the project could reduce annual costs by over 114 million DKK if the intervention would be implemented nationwide while also improving the Patient Reported Outcome Measures.
