An endorsement of the research activity and quality.

This is how the two medical directors at Regional Hospital Horsens and Hospitalsenhed Midt describe the new joint research clinic, which has just been designated by Aarhus University.

"It is a great recognition to be designated as a university clinic. It signifies a very high level and skilled research in both Horsens and Skive. With the university clinic, we are consolidating and strengthening the Central Denmark Region's research efforts in the field of fertility for the benefit of both our own future patients and involuntarily childless people around the world," says Chief Medical Officer Claus Brøckner Nielsen from Hospitalsenhed Midt.

It is the Department of Clinical Medicine (IKM) that, based on an international assessment, has designated the two fertility clinics as a joint university clinic, which is also the first of its kind that spans both departments and hospital units.

At IKM, department head Jørgen Frøkiær is pleased with the joint university clinic.

"We look forward to following and supporting the future work at the new university clinic, which we are confident will continue to deliver important research results and develop new methods in fertility treatment for the benefit of patients," he says.

The new university clinic will have Professor Peter Humaidan from the Fertility Clinic at Skive Regional Hospital as the overall leader and Clinical Associate Professor Kirstine Kirkegaard from the Fertility Clinic at Horsens Regional Hospital as deputy chief.

The fertility clinics in Horsens and Skive provide fertility treatment for involuntarily childless individuals in the Central Denmark Region, and both clinics conduct research on the causes and treatment of fertility problems.

Designation entails commitment

Researchers at the two clinics are behind several notable breakthroughs and are internationally leading in research on female and male infertility.

With the designation as a university clinic, the two clinics now have a better opportunity to apply for funding for their research, and the designation also strengthens the clinics' ability to recruit research talents.

"The designation is an international recognition of the research we have already carried out in Horsens and Skive, but it is also a commitment to continue the level of activity and the very high standard," says Professor Peter Humaidan.

The new university clinic will be formally named University Clinic for Fertility and will officially begin on July 1, 2024.
