News from the Chair - Niels Jessen - June 2025

As the summer holidays approach, we mark another productive year for the Food and Nutrition Network at Aarhus University. Entering our sixth year, the network continues to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and support research with real impact across food, nutrition, and health.

Our annual meeting, held on April 2nd, once again highlighted the diversity of the Network. With a keynote from Professor Anders Rosengren (University of Gothenburg) on precision approaches to type 2 diabetes, and contributions from AU researchers including Professors Anja Viendahl Olsen and Søren Gregersen, the program offered insights across public health, prevention, and innovation. Flash talks and poster sessions showcased the breadth of emerging talent in the network.

A major highlight this year is a new large-scale national research project led by Clinical Professor Søren Gregersen, exploring whether type 2 diabetes can be reversed entirely through lifestyle changes. Supported by just over 100 million DKK from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, this is the largest study of its kind in Denmark. It reflects the growing momentum behind personalised and preventative approaches that include food and nutrition—and underscores the leadership role of AU Health in this space. https://health.au.dk/en/display/artikel/lifestyle-changes-on-prescription-can-we-completely-eliminate-type-2-diabetes

Our collaboration with AU Food and the Faculty of Technical Sciences continues to evolve, with new joint initiatives under discussion. Many of these activities are joined under the umbrella of START, Centre for Sustainable Agrifood Systems | START Research Centre and we encourage all members to join START and get in touch with the steering committee for the Food and Nutrition Network with suggestions for cross-disciplinary projects with the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

Don’t forget to stay updated via the newsletter and network announcements - The Food and Nutrition Network. We wish you all a relaxing and inspiring summer break.
