Three research talents receive grants towards cardiovascular research

Three cardiovascular researchers from Health each receive more than DKK one million from the Danish Cardiovascular Academy to strengthen knowledge and improve treatment options for cardiovascular disease.

Three young researchers from Health are among the Danish Cardiovascular Academy’s initial twenty scholarship recipients. The three research projects on bicarbonate, cardiovascular complications in connection with renal disease, and implants, respectively, can each in their own way improve treatment options in the future.

Maria Sofia Espejo receives DKK 1,150,000 for a two-year postdoc research project. She will investigate whether the concentration of bicarbonate can limit and protect against cardiac ischemia and the development of heart failure.

Sandra Hummelgaard receives DKK 1.1 million for a three-year PhD degree programme. In her project, she investigates cardiovascular complications that have arisen in connection with renal disease with the hope of improving the treatment of patients with renal disease focusing on the enzyme PCSK9.

Henrik Laurits Bjerre receives DKK 1,650,000 for a three-year PhD degree programme. Here he will investigate how modern cordless pacemakers can be used to optimise the treatment of patients with arrhythmia (heart rhythm disturbances).

In the first of a total of five rounds of grants, the Danish Cardiovascular Academy has received 100 applications and selected the 20 best projects. The academy is supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Danish Heart Foundation.
